Plans to increase ticket prices to the construction of a 3D museum at Borobudur Temple

The government announced plans to increase ticket prices to go up to Borobudur Temple to Rp750,000 for local tourists and $100 for foreign tourists. Citing the official website, so far, the ticket price for local visitors or tourists is Rp50 thousand.

The plan to increase ticket prices is carried out in order to limit visitors due to the decline in the floor of the Borobudur Temple which has been damaged by 30% to 40%. The plan has also drawn controversy in the community.

Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said that this step was taken to preserve the historical and cultural wealth of the archipelago.

"So, the sense of responsibility to care for and preserve one of the historical sites of this archipelago can continue to grow in the hearts of the younger generation in the future," said Luhut.

The government will also limit the number of visitors to Borobudur Temple to 1,200 people per day. The President Commissioner of the Borobudur Temple Tourism Park (TWC) Kacung Marijan explained that these restrictions only apply to visitors who want to climb up to the top of the temple. This means that people can still visit the area around the temple without restrictions.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy also plans to build a three-dimensional (3D) museum around the Borobudur Temple.

According to the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Uno, the 3D museum is expected to complement the community's experience amidst the restrictions on the number of temple visitors.

"We will provide an innovative approach, how we present a three-dimensional museum around Borobudur Temple, the light and sound will be built, so that although visitors are limited to 1,200 people per day, the experiences and memories of the community will be the same," Sandiaga said at the weekly press. briefing held virtually on Monday (6 June).
